South of the Clouds was born from the deep longing of its Yunnan-born founder for the flavors of his homeland. As a graduate of New York University living in the U.S. for many years, he never forgot the unique tastes and rich warmth of Yunnan cuisine. To turn this longing into reality, he began experimenting and developing recipes in his kitchen, striving to recreate each bowl of Yunnan dishes that carry the memories of home.
With passion and determination, he opened a small restaurant near NYU named South of the Clouds, symbolizing the mysterious and beautiful land of Yunnan—“the land of southern clouds.” At first, it was simply a place to bring a taste of home to nearby students and neighbors. Over time, more and more people were drawn to the distinct flavors of Yunnan cuisine.
South of the Clouds gradually grew from a campus eatery into a beloved brand among the wider public. From fragrant rice noodles to delicious local snacks, every dish allows diners to experience the nature and culture of Yunnan. The brand remains committed to cooking with care, preserving authentic flavors so every guest can taste the spirit of Yunnan.
More than just a restaurant, South of the Clouds is a bridge connecting a distant land to a new home. It carries a deep sentiment and represents a dedication to food and cultural respect. Looking ahead, South of the Clouds will continue to bring the flavors of Yunnan to more people, offering everyone a place to find warmth and memories.
To bring the authentic flavors and rich cultural heritage of Yunnan to the world by crafting traditional dishes with care and passion, creating a welcoming space where every guest can experience the warmth and spirit of home.
At Yunnan Kitchen, we are committed to crafting high-quality broths. Every day, we simmer a rich blend of pork leg bones, pork spine, beef bones, mature chicken, and chicken frames for over 8 hours. This long cooking process releases a wealth of nutrients—such as proteins, amino acids, peptides, and lipids—into the soup in the form of small, water-soluble molecules, making them easier for the human body to digest and absorb.
